Nuclear energy, is it good or bad? Can you tell me why? There is an on going debate about whether or not nuclear energy is a trustworthy and sustainable source. If you were to ask someone what they think about nuclear energy, they would most likely respond with a negative answer. In fact not a lot of people know how nuclear energy works or what nuclear fission is. The truth of the matter is nuclear power is a sustainable energy source that lowers carbon emission and is very renewable. The energy comes from a nuclear reaction, known as nuclear fission, that releases a lot of heat. Enough heat to boil water and create steam which turns a generator to create electricity. In order to heat the water, you need radioactive material to make the nuclear reaction, most nuclear power plants use uranium and sometimes plutonium. The use of radioactive material and past nuclear disasters like Chernobyl, are most likely the reason that people are so afraid of nuclear energy. When people think nuclear energy they think of radioactive material seeping into our homes and killing every living thing on the planet. But with the right precautions, nuclear power can be a safe and trustworthy source of energy. If I were to pick this as my capstone project topic, I would explain how the nuclear fission process works, why nuclear energy is misunderstood, and go over the pros and cons of nuclear energy to see if it nuclear power is either safe or dangerous.
